Several months ago, a guy I work with (Gary) approached me about "restoring" his Wheel Horse... A 314-8. I've been working on it in my free time for the past couple weeks.

It spent some MAJOR time outside... whtractor/banghead.gif But it was his dad's tractor and deserves to live again. Here's the progress...

I started with this at about 4am...

I originally planned on just stripping it down to the hoodstand, but I knew that I had to go a little farther to make it "right"....

I know now that I will be "farming out" the sandblasting on the next one(s)....
The cabinet works great on the smaller stuff, but the big stuff is a PITA.

Finally starting to go back together...

Rattle cans on all of it...

Krylon Cherry Red and Duplicolor Silver Metallic on the wheels...

You can get REALLY good results with a rattle can... It just takes lots of practice. whtractor/thumbsup.gif

Jon, super, super job! whtractor/not_worthy.gif

You're right about new hardware - I'm using Grade 5 or stainless nuts/bolts/washers everywhere on my 312's I'm rebuilding - really sharpens up the look, and I, too am a rattle-can fanatic! whtractor/hide.gif

I just wish I had your and Duke's stick-to-itiveness...it's taken me all winter to get about as far as you have in two weeks. You guys are something else!

Fer sure! My shop looks like a huge, weird set of wind chimes with all the parts hanging up drying and waiting for me get off my arse and get back to work on 312-8 #2 and #3! whtractor/hide.gif

I've never worked on the round hoods to know how many parts and pieces they have, but WH for darned sure packed 'em into the 300/400/500 series machines!

Your project is looking GREAT, by the way!

Thanks fellas!

Good news!!! GOOD NEWS!!!

I cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor, ran new fuel lines, hooked up the rest of the wiring, etc... today. She started RIGHT up!!! And, with a minor adjustment of the carb, it runs like a CLOCK! whtractor/thumbsup.gif

I do have a few questions though...

I don't know much at all about the charging systems that don't involve a starter/ generator... I do know that the 314 has the non-regulated 3A charging system with a seperate lighting coil.

The volt meter NEVER moves from the lowest reading... Should it come up to 12 volts when the key is turned on, or only when the engine is running?

What could be the problem and how do I diagnose/ fix it?

The lighting coil is fine, I hooked a temporary light to it and it works as it should.

Any and all input is GREATLY appreciated. JB

You do great work! whtractor/not_worthy.gif

If you get bored this winter I have a couple that need to be done. whtractor/hide.gif

You need to make sure to take a picture of the individual's face when he comes and picks it up. Priceless indeed!

Oh btw.......how do you find time to get all of that done with all of the Horse trading you have been doing???? whtractor/whistling2.gif

I must say, you are doing one heck of a job on the restore. I have a 312-8 that I am working on but it is not going back stock. The hood and fenderpans are really in bad shape and I am customizing it a little. I have a C120 and a Bronco 14 restored back to original but this one will be a little different. I have a hood from another early model WH (don't know what year) and a set of round fenders from a old sears Suburban. The round fenders bolted right to the gas tank and fender pan brackets by drilling three holes in each side. No cutting or welding. The round fenders just make it look like a "real" miniture tractor.
I like the silver touchyou did. I had planned on putting a little silver touch to mine and you have inspired me to do it. The person you are doing the restore for is a lucky guy to have someone like you give his tractor that much detail. Keep the photo's comming and when I finish mine, I will try to post some photo's on this site from home.

Then, I'll be wire brushing/ sanding the deck and the dozer blade... and painting them and it'll be DONE! whtractor/woohoo.gif

I'll try to get it outside tomorrow for some better pics.

Has your friend seen it before that picture was taken? If not, bring a camera!

The face he'll make will fall into the category of "Priceless".

Yes, unfortunately he came and looked at it Friday... and he has a link to this thread. I wish I would have made him wait... covered it up with a sheet and unvieled it to him. That would have been COOL!

He seems to be thrilled about it though! whtractor/thumbsup.gif

I took it on the first drive it's been on in YEARS... Everything is good! I need to put the dozer/tiller hitch on still and the throttle knob and that's it! (other than the deck and dozer repaint)

Jon,

That is simply beautiful! Your co-worker probably couldn't believe his eyes when that pulled in to his driveway. What a great gesture and another tractor that is going to live for a long, long time. I bet it won't sit outside anymore! whtractor/whistling2.gif

Thanks for sharing the progress from start to finish! whtractor/thumbsup2.gif

That can't be the end of the story! What was you coworkers reaction when you presented him with the restored machine?
