well I knoiw its not as 754 or 854
but could be a 701 but dont think so can you post a picture of the front end with hood and axle and one below the dash and its a recoil start no battery box unless it was removed

stone_henge- 11-13-2008
looks like a 702 to me,,,unless you can see where the tecumseh engine plate was then it might be a 552 ,,,,looks like the battery box is in bad shape..but hey its a nice find...good luck horseplay.gif

DMESS- 11-13-2008
It's certainly a 1962 model. Looks like it had a starter button removed at some point plus the serial decal is not covering said hole, so I'd say that rules out the 502. Chances are good it was a 552 cause (and I've used this nasty logic a lot recently) The KOHLER would still be there. laugh.gif

Soooo, model 552 or 702 with the chances favoring the 552 due to Kohler engine longevity. whtractor/yankchain[1].gif

Nice find! whtractor/thumbsup.gif

I'm no help at what model it is, but it is definately a 1962...

Just make it whatever you want then!

I have a engineless 633 that is going to become a 853.... I know they never made one, but I'm gonna!!! cool.gif

Well I was right on the 1962. Now I think it is a 502 because I do not see any holes to bolt the battery box down with, but 62 may be different. Where they welded in on a 62. Alot of 502s and 633s had a tool box instead of a battery box.
Have a great one. Henry in Tenn.

B box was welded on the '62's and yes quite a few 502's seem to have the toolbox.

stone_henge- 11-13-2008
looking at that frame picture it looks like a kohler engine sat on it and the battery box is broken off,,,Looks like an impression of a battery on the frame whtractor/scratchhead.gif

I have a 502. It has a battery box (welded on) but the option toolbox sits in it instead of a battery. The battery box is visible on the right side of this picture: user posted image

In this same pic you can see the steel engine mounting plate used on the Tecumseh powered machines. The Kohler powered ones had a cast iron oil pan bolted directly to the frame - you may be able to see "witness" marks in the paint.

As Dustin stated yours has had a starter switch mounted in the dash tower at some stage. The 502 did not have this, and the serial tag was put over the hole, as in this pic: user posted image

Ok , did what i should have to start with. looked at the pictures. You can see from the back side that it did have a starter push buttom on it. (552-702) whtractor/yankchain[1].gif

that shifter level is interesting on your 502 ...it looks like the ones Ive seen on the 61 models

Apparently the early 502's had the shift lever with 1 bend, later ones had 2 bends to allow clearance for the hy 2 hydraulic pump.

Something else. Must be an early 62. has a 61 shifter and a 61 steering weld. Like I said in another topic. Using up the left over Parts from 1961 on the the 1962 like they did on the 1045"s. You can see half of the battery box still there next to the stering assy. Thinking now by looking at frame it is a 702. Henry in Tennessee

This is a 702. The bolt on dash plate, single tie rod, 2 bolt mounting of lift arm, and serial number tag tell us that it is a '62. It had electric start as evidenced by the paint markings where a starter push button has been removed, and the serial number tag is mounted below this hole. This tag covered the starter button hole on the 502s. That tells us it was not a 502. The frame paint is marked in a manner consistent with having had a Kohler mounted on it, and the choke cable (Choke and throttle are not original, they have the wrong knobs.) is worn and bent in a manner consistent with it having been routed down under the flywheel housing and up to the carb on a Kohler. This tells us it was not a 552. Your steering wheel has been changed. My 702 has the plastic wheel, and your serial number is higher than the one on mine. Your shift lever is correct for '62. It has the same bends in it that my 702 has, and mine has the HY-2 lift on it. The early '62s DID come with a STRAIGHT (Not counting the forward bend just above where it exits the tranny.) shift lever and the HY-2 mounting instructions show where and how to bend it to clear the pump. These same instructions say that later '62s have the bend from the factory, and give a part number for a factory bent one if you don't want to bend your own.

Why not throw a K-181s on it and build an 802?
