Glad you like the decals guys whtractor/thumbsup.gif
It was great, feeling like a little Kid again sticking them on the tin biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

If the weather stays good this week most of my time will be spent building the extension, but if it rains Im sure i can find something to do on this project biggrin.gif

Wow things move fast on Redsquare, this post is down to page 4 already!!
Anyway, just a quick update to let you know i have been thinking about this project even though ive not had any time to do any work on it due to my workshack extension..

Ive been thinking about welding, wondering if my old trusty MIG welder is up to the job of a lot of heavy welding.. whtractor/scratchhead.gif

After the normal smokes and coffeepaper.gif i came to the conclusion that i needed something a bit more heavy duty....

Soooo, this arrived at my door today biggrin.gif

Wish me luck with the ARC welding as it's something i havnt done in many years, and if Im honest i was never that good at whtractor/hide.gif

Sorry this hasnt been an action packed update, but things will happen shortly whtractor/thumbsup.gif

tasmi01- 09-25-2008
whtractor/omg.gif That will be ONE MEAN machine way to use whtractor/scratchhead.gif ing skills whtractor/not_worthy.gif

thankyousign.gif
Yep lots of whtractor/scratchhead.gif ing ahead, but the challenge is all part of the fun biggrin.gif
Just ordered 5KG of 2.5mm welding rods, so getting started on the serious fabrication work is getting closer biggrin.gif
One thing I need to do before starting the fab work is to get the 314-8 off that undersized and very un-level bench, and get it er... on the level smile.gif

rustbucket- 09-26-2008
ah arc welding my fav welding. never could get the hang of tig and mig but good old arc thats where its at strongest weld and so easy to use just listen for sizzling bacon and the weld will be beautiful.

If only it could smell like sizzling bacon too biggrin.gif

As you know not much has been happening on this project what with all the building work going on, but with the new king size bench up i thought it was about time i mocked up project 6x6x6 to try and work out how to fit everything in place.

It was at this point that the 6x6x6 almost became a 4x4x4 instead whtractor/hide.gif
The two reasons behind maybe loosing a couple of wheels was cost of all the parts, and thoughts of building a front loader on it at some point for which the space where the middle wheels would go could come in handy for mounting the said loader.

Despite it looking quite meaty from the front.

And quite scary if you happen to be run over by it.

four wheels just wouldn't look right or offer the traction Im after from this build, so all six wheels will be staying whtractor/thumbsup.gif biggrin.gif

One thing that has been bugging me since the start (if you can call it that) of this build is the steering by brakes.
It's not that the steering wouldn't work, it's this project would be much better if you could turn the WH on a dime biggrin.gif
yes, that's right i want this build to be able to turn like a Cat bulldozer and that means the wheels turning in opposite directions each side biggrin.gif

Some said i was having a laugh and it couldn't be done, but i have come up with a way of building it that uses belts, pulleys and only a couple of cogs biggrin.gif

I will post the plans up as soon as i have finished... er the plans on the pc.
I could scan and post my scribbling but the are hard enough for me to understand whtractor/hide.gif

The other thing i have been thinking of is using hydraulics to drive the wheels each side (must of been inspired by Jim's Hydrobeast whtractor/thumbsup.gif ) but i need to do some major research on the subject..

More to come when it happens whtractor/thumbsup.gif

Stigian- 11-15-2008
Yes folks, it's that time of year again when i dig this thread up from the depths and give you all an update..

So far vast amounts of nothing happening have er.. been happening whtractor/whistling2.gif while i scrape the pennies together for the hydro bits and other parts..

The good news is i have found an engine for it that is a tad more powerful than the 14hp Kohler engine that came in the 314-8 whtractor/thumbsup.gif

It's not another Kohler or a big Briggs.. it's.......a.....er...Ford.
Before i run away and hide for even thinking or doing the swap let me explain..

You may remember our little pick-up that was called Betsie, well she went for her MOT (English road safety -*test*-('")) and failed with flying colors mostly on vast amounts of rust sad.gif

Well, it seemed a shame to send the engine off to the scrap yard....
Can you guess whats coming next? biggrin.gif

So Project 6x6x6 will be getting an 1800cc diesel engine whtractor/thumbsup.gif

A 1800cc TURBO diesel engine biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Ok, i might of lost the plot a bit this time wacko.gif and i may well be beyond help.gif
But as the engine is free it would be rude not to use it biggrin.gif

If all goes to plan i should have the engine out of Betsie on Monday, and can start working out how much i need to widen the chassis by, widen the hood by, widen.... well quite a lot of bits really whtractor/whistling2.gif

It's going to be a fun winter in Stigs Workshack biggrin.gif

4StarCstms- 11-15-2008
And just whats wrong with Ford there mr ian... see there I was just starting to really dig all your projects... whtractor/banghead.gif hahaha

Cool project - should be interesting to say the least, and NICE job on the metal work!

Sparky- 11-15-2008
Cool!! Just might be the first Turbo Wheel Horse in existence whtractor/scratchhead.gif .
Will it be mounted sideways so it can drive the tranny? Or do you have some other diabolical plan?
Mike......

At least it doesn't have Ford written in big letters on the rocker cover biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
I think it just feels strange to be putting a Ford lump and not a Kohler in a WH.

Don't worry Mike, i have a cunning/diabolical plan in mind biggrin.gif
The engine will run front to back with a hydraulic pump somewhere between my legs to power the wheels.
A bit like Jim's (Mith) setup on his Hydrobeast, but more wheels and less bending in the middle biggrin.gif

tj4428- 11-16-2008
Looks like fun to me. Can you adapt the hood so you don't have to modify it.

Stigian- 11-22-2008
Cheers Mich, yes it's gong to be fun biggrin.gif

It's looking like i am going modify the hood a bit, but not too much rolleyes.gif
I will need to lengthen it a bit and maybe widen it by an inch or two.. Oh, and a grill for the engine's radiator might be handy as well whtractor/thumbsup.gif

Well the la-*test*-('") new's is, the engine and trans are out of Betsie the pick-up biggrin.gif
Removing it was quite fun using a jack and quite few blocks of wood..
Guess who sold his engine hoist and tripod during the summer thinking it would never be needed again whtractor/banghead.gif

Of course i couldn't of moved the engine without help from my 312-8 and an old 4 wheeled trolley whtractor/thumbsup.gif

user posted image

A closer view... The trans has now been removed from the engine.

user posted image

No post from me would be complete without a daft photo............
So.. here it is biggrin.gif

user posted image

The next job to do is to pull the trans apart and see how much of it i can use to get the power from the engine to a hydraulic pump..
With the full length of the engine and "drive extra" worked out, i can finally start on the chassis work whtractor/woohoo.gif banana.gif

whtractor/not_worthy.gif Keep the pictures coming. This is one I've got to see. whtractor/thumbsup.gif
