Well I was cleaning out the garage today, Trying to find that
magic combination that would allow......dare I say? Room for
one more tractor! (or at least a place to work.....lol)

I drove the GT-14 out and parked it behind one of my trailers
and lowered the bucket on the trailer.

I did my thing and was pretty pleased with finding a little more
space. I went to start the GT and it almost kicked over....not
quite though. Then I tried a few more times.....nothing....
I took the spark plug off and it looked good. It looked dry
like there was no gas getting in there. I put a little starting fluid
in the hole and tried again.....nada.... Then I noticed that oh
so familiar smell of ozone..... Something electrical must have
given up the ghost. The starter cranks.....but won't start.

So....dark is falling and we are suppose to have a big snow
tomarow and friday. I really want this thing in the garage..
So I tried to open the valve under the seat for easy rolling...
Stuck tight. I tried tapping on it several times.......nada...
I tried to loosen the nut under it......double nada.....whtractor/banghead.gif

So the GT-14 with loader is stuck in place... Just like throwing
out a big boat anchor...

Plan C was to think of something to tow it up to the garage with.
So plan C was the Super C! I got out my tow chains of various
lengths and a heavy duty car ratchet strap. I hooked it all up.
And keep in mind there is 2 inches of snow still left on the ground.
I let the C warm up a while and pushed the lever forward.. we
were moving! Then the tire began to slip. Did I mention that I have
to pull it uphill too??? dry.gif Winter weather, cold, darkness coming
on, dead vehicle.....and uphill to top it off! Sounds familiar.... unsure.gif
I repositioned the C-195 and lengthened the strap so I was on top of
the hill. The C pulled it up that incline! I had to get off several times
to steer the GT. I got it out in front of the garage doors. Rear wheels
locked up all the way on the GT. The super C never slipped again.
Then with a garage full of wheel horses and things.....I still needed
to reverse direction and pull it inside.....(still uphill......snifff). Well
there was only so much room left to have the C in front pulling it in.
So I got it up as far as I could.. Then something occured to me.
I will use the starter to get it in! wink.gif I pushed in the hydraulic lever.
pushed the motion lever into the forward position. I cranked the
starter and it drove into the garage under starter power! Though
not recommended....it worked. Now I just have to wait until
tomarow and swap out parts and see what works and what doesn't.
No I don't have a meter anymore.....it burned up on a previous
project.....sheeeesh..... bitch.gif

you might have fried the ignition trigger under the flywheel shroud. not a cheap part i had to get one for my GT and coast me like 90 some odd dollars from a local small engines place.

Dont these have the points and coil like we used to seeing?
Mike......

nope the GT-14 kohler 14 HP used kohlers breakerless electronic ignition and has a triger moduel mounted under the shroud and it set off by the fly wheel every revolution.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that. Does this apply to all years of the GT-14?
Mike........

that i know of yes but im not the expert so hopefully one will chime in.

i had a gt-14 that the module went out on so i took that off and if you look at the front of the engine were the carb is u can see a spot were you can put points well you drill out the hole for the push rod slide it in mount up yous point condenser coil wire it in gap it and it shall run like a top again plus you save your self some money that way. and i used a push rod from any kohler i think there all tthe same lenght and points condenser are pritty much universal biggrin.gif

Mine does have a visable coil and condensor.

Maybe this has already been converted......

is it a normal coil like the round ones usally used?

Teddy da Bear- 11-19-2008
Yep......looks like a coil on any of my other horses......

then ya it has been converted you may just need to clean the points if that dont work then the condensor or coil may have gone and or the ignition id start with the points tho

Some good news.. I found out I have spark at the plug. So it has to be a fuel supply problem.

It was funny...when I first told my wife about the tractor dying. She just said "I can fix that for ya". I think my mouth dropped open... I was sure taken by surprize.
She does not know a socket from a socket wrench! But anyway, this sure made me smile.

And then every day after she said that.. I asked her if my tractor was fixed yet?
She would act like she did not know what I was talking about. Finally after I asked again for the last time. She asked me what the first thing to do was. I said, you need to check for spark.
(side note: I know it is faster to do it myself, but I wanted to see if she could really do it).

So I told her how to do it and she complained that she could not hold the plug and turn the key at the same time. So I told her that I would "assist" her and turn the key....lol So we did it and found the tractor had spark. She was so scared of getting shocked that she wore these huge welding gloves to insulate herself. laughter.gif

I wish I had a picture!

The GT-14 and loader is running!

Sorry......did not see Burly on his trip out this way......lol

But this thing is almost useless with a load and no counterweight on
the snow covered ground....lol Got to build that weight box....

So what was wrong with it? whtractor/whistling2.gif
