And prep the surface by cleaning it with "prepsol" or alchohol before painting. Do not touch the surface to be painted with your bare hands. Paint reacts badly to contaminated surfaces. |
I've been using MEK and Acetone to wipe down bare
metal and mineral spirits to wipe down primer. I
hope they're ok. No problems...........yet!

Bdanie what was the other brand or product that you topcoated on, some times you spray something over another and it( the base) swells up ,Did it do it right away or was it after awhile ,sometimes the only way to stop it is to spray with lighter coats with longer dry times between coats or use a sealer thats for the topcoat so it doesn't swell the base,
I cant remember what brand the self etching primer was.I already tossed the can.I will have to hit the parts store to find out.I have pretty much put it on the back burner for now.I figured I would give everything time to cure before I tackle it again.
I apppreciate all the input and replies. I will give it a try in another week after turkey day.
With the holidays coming up,my part time job is turning into a full time. They don't understand that I need some time with my family and my other ongoing projects.

Some peeps say I should have used an etching primer on all the bare metal parts before I used the filler primer. I used 80 grit down to the metal, then primered. So I'm hoping that will be enough to make everything stick well. |
I dont know what I'm doing either, but what I did has seemed to work OK.
I used etching primer in a rattle can (from NAPA) on my frame and the heavily rusted toolbox, in places where I wasnt going to be doing a lot of wet sanding. I followed this with grey "sandable" primer, then top coat.
On areas like the inside of the hood, inside of the hoodstand and belt gaurds, and wheels, I used Valspar Red Oxide primer over bare metal and then top coated.
On the critical areas, the top of the hood, outside of the belt guard, fenders etc, there was a little bit of bondo, so I used (Valspar) sandable primer or high build primer (from NAPA) so I could flat it down severly. Then top coat.
I wiped everything down with some 3M "wax and grease" remover.
Seems OK so far...
I did figure out it was Duplicolor primer

I havent heard too many good things about Duplicolor.Would using that kind of self etching primer under rustoleum give me the problems I am having?
