I just finished rebuilding and cleaning up a Uni-Drive transmission off a 633 parts tractor.
After filling it with 80/90 oil, a hairline crack became visible on the small half and it runs about three inches across the lower middle bolt hole. whtractor/omg.gif
My question is; can this be welded or repaired, or am I the proud owner of a lot of good transmission parts. whtractor/banghead.gif

I'm having trouble envisioning (sp?) where the crack is. Can you post a picture?

Cast iron is weldable, or can sometimes be "plugged" with a series of screwed in studs. Probably cheapest just to change the case(s) if the internals are good - there's plenty of good cases around with bad internals (or cheap transmissions with unknown internals).

Where are you located?

Edit: sorry just saw your location. Are you near Dale (thirdroc)? He had some transmissions he was trying to move.

Ok first we would need to take a look at the crack, from what you discribed it might be repairable. A good welder with a nickle rod might do it if you preheat the case before welding. whtractor/thumbsup2.gif

I gather this was a frozen water in the transmission type crack (I saw the word Michigan in your signature dry.gif ) , it is posible to swap in another right side housing. If you need one let me know as I have a used extra from the Uni-Drive rebuild article I am doing for Lawn and Garden Collector Magazine.

I had one welded once,,,the price wasnt bad ,,and it was easier than replacing the trans for me.

Thanks for all the responces. I would post pictures, but I don't have a clue how I would go about doing it. I am almost completely computer illiterate. whtractor/imstupid.gif

The transmission was filled with water and thats what I figured cracked it,too.

I think you guys are right. The easiest and best fix is to just replace the shell with a good one.
