I am looking to purchase a 5.5 Lauson for my 604. I live 15 miles East of St. Louis, MO.
Thanks,
Dave

hey dave, you may already know this but the 604 had the 6hp tecumseh engine, if you are planning to go back orginal...also there is very little difference in the two engines and the 6 is a much easier find!

good luck

Thanks a lot! I'll look for a 6 HP Tecumseh then.

On second thought, I am not going to worry about going original on the motor. I need to have a key start so about any good horizontal shaft motor will do. The 8 HP pull start Tecumseh that is on it now is becoming increasingly difficult for me to start.
A guy on Craigs list has some Tecumseh horizontal short blocks for sale 4 HP to 11 HP for $40.00 to $85.00.
I have a 7 HP key start Tecumsech engine that came on a Work Horse 700 that I purchased about a month ago. It was supposed to have been running two or three years ago. I haven't had a chance to see if I can get it fired up yet. The gentleman that I purchased it from said it would start and run great, but if it was shut off, it would not start back up. I guess not until it had cooled down or whatever.
Could I take whatever I need off of my 7 HP and put it on one of his short blocks? Possibly an 11 HP short block, or would I need to stay with a 7 HP?
I do not know what all would be involved, but wouldn't for the most part simply be a matter of unbolting and bolting back on the short block or am I being too naive?
Your advice will be very appreciated,
Dave

dave I have no experience with the 11 hp engine...I would check to see if the engine plate would bolt up to the bottom of the engine to make the pulleys line up with the belt guard...also if the 11 is bigger you may check hood clearance...but on the other hand I do know that the 7hp tec will bolt right in perfect!
